What to do while you wait for a plumber

Burst or leaking pipe
Close the main stopcock. It is usually where the water supply enters the property, often near the water meter at the boundary or under the kitchen sink. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Leaking geyser
Switch the geyser off at the distribution board first. Then close the cold water supply valve on the pipe feeding the geyser, usually beside it in the roof space. Leave the geyser cover closed.
Overflowing toilet or drain
Stop flushing and stop running taps that drain into it. Close the small stop tap on the pipe behind the toilet, and keep children and pets away from dirty water.
